What is Trochanteric Bursitis and Hip Pain?
Trochanteric bursitis is a painful condition affecting the bursa of the hip. Bursa’s are basically like shock absorbing pads in the body. They occur in areas where there are many muscles and tendons passing over a bone. Their job is to cushion the area, so that muscles and tendons can work properly.
The Trochanteric Bursa is found at the side of the hip, where a lot of our glute and buttock muscles attach. Trochanteric Bursitis occurs when this bursa becomes compressed, irritated and inflamed causing hip pain.
Common Trochanteric Bursitis Symptoms
- Hip pain laying on the side
- Pain after exercise (walking, jogging, leg day at the gym)
- Eases with heat or anti-inflammatories
- Discomfort with prolonged sitting
What causes this Hip Pain or Bursitis in the Hip?
Irritation of the bursa and trochanteric bursitis is generally the result of increasing forces and strain on body.
We often see this problem in those who have an increase or change in their activity level. This could be getting into a new gym routine or picking up jogging.
Our body generally doesn’t like rapid changes in activity level and work-load. In Trochanteric Bursitis this causes the muscles & tendons and in turn the bursa or ’shock-absorber’ to become overworked and get aggravated and cause hip pain.
